Doris Included in Ireland Squad But Joe McCarthy Left Out

Ireland rugby team announcement news

Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has named captain Doris in his Irish team for the autumn Tests, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in early May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to face the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.

Ulster player Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash are also absent due to injury, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery after the Lions tour.

Leinster prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped member in the 34-man squad, but Irish rugby authorities says uncapped Munster duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".

Following facing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said Farrell, back to Ireland duty after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a mostly experienced selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the starting fly-half position. The fly-half role is remains available, as Prendergast and Crowley set to face off for the first time in Saturday's URC match at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen with the coach opting against selecting the province's Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has picked Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a recall for the western province's Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.

Outside backs Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings during the summer with a brace each in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of his province's three United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in the second string's loss by the English in the English city previously.

McCarthy was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a international appearance.

Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, while veteran Northern province second row Iain Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to cover for Doris should the captain fails to recover full fitness in time to play New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on Monday before flying to the US on the following day.
