Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Fighters Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative showcasing celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces expanding in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Key plot points for the third episode of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Unveiled

The third episode concluded with a huge suspense moment and presented the first table of heroes who will separate from the main group to embark on their independent quest, distinct from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table features Teor (portrayed by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Considering 13 cast members, it was obvious from the beginning that having everyone at a single group would be impossible.

Hence, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Prelude, weaving together the individual narratives before dividing into three smaller tables: Warriors, Strategists, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for participants who are drawn to a classically intense battle-oriented narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.

Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might seem unsuited, but the actions of episode 3 show why these five characters are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the party knows exactly where to go next after a violent opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose demise started the narrative’s action—used The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, entering the hidden lair, assaulting the character, and swiping all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The antagonist then paid off his liabilities and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each character has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, wants revenge.
  • Kattigan has experience in the northern area and cautions that it is a nasty place.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having disobeyed his house’s orders to kill the target and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their reputation as important members in the powerful family could assist the team access locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter swore a unbreakable promise to The savior for his rescue and will now follow him wherever.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the powers that govern the city for a range of causes, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and The healer turned against the influential house and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The target is marked for death by the family.

This leaves them few options but to journey toward Timmony in search of Casimir.

Future Episodes

Based on the latest episode’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table will not appear the following episode, leaving the remaining eight cast members to form the Explorers and Schemers parties.

Fans can anticipate discovering which characters will be in which group in the story’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
